Western Queensland Bull Rider wins Marrabel SA!
(February 27, 2012) – Western Queensland’s Grant Wells made the long trip to Marrabel from his cattle property at Boulia, south of Mt Isa to attend the event. Because of the distance he has to travel to get to most to the events on tour Wells is selective about the ones he contests. Marrabel is always one he never misses.
On a night when the bulls were the overall victors the bull riding cream of the crop rose to the occasion. With the format consisting of 22 bull riders riding over two complete rounds with the top eight scores returning to battle it out in the Championship Round it was always going to be a challenge in the very warm conditions.
Young title contender Sam Larsen from Katherine in the Northern Territory took the early lead at the event with an 85 points score on Blue Dog Doin Time. 2011 Marrabel Champion Jock Connolly looked determined to have success again in 2012 scoring 83 points on Biddle’s 710. Grant Wells rode Ariats Tomato Juice for 81 points and third place.
The second round was punishing for the riders with only two qualified rides recorded. North Queensland bull rider Cody Teece started off the scoring on Woodall’s money bull Two Tone. Upper Horton’s Troy Wilkinson was only able to manage a 74 point score on is draw.
The Championship round was loaded with bull power. Wells qualified mid field and set the bar with an 86 point ride on Biddle’s Blue Dog Doin Time. He would be the only rider to record a score in the Championship round. Wells was thrilled to win the event and was presented the trophy buckle in front of a crowd over 3,300. He went on to say “Marrabel is the best outdoor event in the country and thank you to the South Australian bull riding fans, you are the best.”
More bang, more buck, Buckle Up with the PBR.
