URALLA COWBOY WINS BEACH & BULLS CLASSIC
(October 17th 2011) Rain, hail and high winds could not deter Uralla, NSW professional bull rider Chris Lowe from performing 2 sensational rides to secure the inaugural Sunshine Coast event win on Saturday night.
With some exceptional lead up promotions the Beach and Bulls Classic was well on its way to be a sold out event, however with freak storms hitting the Sunshine Coast 2 hours before the scheduled start time, only the die-hard PBR fans braved the wet conditions to see 40 of the nation’s leading bull riders battle it out.
The Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles League Club did a sensational job in developing the regular league venue into a very unique bull riding arena, big screens either side of the bucking chutes, concert sound system, massive pyrotechnics display and a seating structure that gave fans an up close and personal look into the sport of professional bull riding.
In the first section, Lachlan Richardson would be the only rider to manage a score with an 80.5 point ride aboard Gill & Sons, “Bambino”. Original concerns that the damp surface would be a hindrance to the bulls was quickly dismissed as the bulls dominated the first section.
With section 1 going to the bulls, section 2 would go to the riders with Troy Wilkinson taking an early lead in the event with an 87 point ride aboard Frank Biddle’s, “Rebel Rock”. This section would also see Lowe, Jeff Moretto and Sam Larsen make qualified rides and secure their spot in the Championship Round.
The last section of the 1st round would see both Ryan Story & Sam O’Connor score 85.5 points splitting 2nd & 3rd, placing themselves as strong contenders going into the final and deciding Championship Round of the competition.
With the bulls dominating the event and only 9 scores posted in the first round, Fergus Cordie was drawn back to complete the field of riders in the Championship Round and would become the first rider to taste the Sunshine Coast Beach sand, followed by Larsen, Kennedy and Richardson. Lowes match up against Biddle’s “Eagle Rock” would change the momentum as this pair teamed up to produce and event high score of an 87.5 point ride and the lead in the competition.
The in-form New Zealand cowboy, Fraser Babbington kept up his consistency with a solid 84 point ride aboard another Biddle bull, “Blue Dog Doin Time” with Jeff Moretto going one better on Gill and Sons, “Buck Owens” marking 84.5 points and moving him to overall 2nd position in the competition.
Round 1 leaders, Wilkinson, Storey and O’Connor would face-off against 3 exceptionally tough bulls that consisted of Night Stalker, Dark n Stormy and the notorious Bambi’s Blood, who in turn defeated the riders in an extremely quick fashion giving Chris Lowe his first PBR event of the new season.
