The Bulls are back in Hughenden!
(Aug 26, 2011) - YOU DON’T FORGET the first time you experience the brutal power of a bull up close. Nothing else compares to watching first hand “Man against powerful beast”.
You certainly won’t forget the person who invited you to experience the Professional Bull Riders. The PBR invites you to share the best as the countdown begins to the Southern Cross Media PBR Touring Pro Division Hughenden.
Saturday, September 3rd will see a tsunami of people converge on the township of Hughenden to witness one of the PBR’s signature events on the annual national tour as bull riders from around the nation battle it out for the massive $10 000 prize-purse.
With a full book of what can only be described as the nation’s most accomplished riders, the Hughenden event is shaping up to be an event not to be missed. Featuring the likes of NSW bull riders Chris Lowe and two time Australian Champion David Kennedy. They will be joined by recently crowned Australian Champion Jock Connolly and the 2011 PBR Troy Dunn Invitational Champion New Zealander Fraser Babbington along with a host of other athletes from around the nation hungry for a Hughenden event win and a kick start to the new season.
To secure a win in the sport of Professional Bull Riding, 50% of the total score is determined by how the rider controls his ride, whilst the other 50% of the score is given to how well the bull performs. Not only does the cowboy have to have his riding pants on each and every time he nods his head, but he also hopes that the bull contractor has also done his job and brought a bull good enough for him to win on.
Richmond based stock contractor and former 2 times Australian Bull Riding Champion, Darren Brandenburg is all too aware of the caliber of bull required in today’s competitions and even though he is relatively new to the stock contractor scene, he has been test piloting and trading in bucking bulls for over two decades.
Finding a potential PBR bucking bull is by no means and easy task, genetics and breeding with the right bloodlines is quickly becoming the favored approach for many Australian contractors, however from past experiences, Brandenburg knows there are still plenty of superstar bucking bulls roaming paddocks around Australia that will go through their life undetected. One of his latest finds is exactly that, Big Brian, a Char bray herd bull, that Brandenburg picked up from Ray & Judy Heslin’s, Inverleigh Station in Normanton.
“Big Brian is just one of the 120 plus bulls I currently own, but he has to be one of my favourites, he is tough and spectacular to watch and will get a rider a winner’s cheque if he is good enough to weather his storm of moves”, Brandenburg states.
On the other end of the spectrum is Suicidal Blonde, a genetically breed bull who’s father “Little Yellow Jacket” was a multiple PBR World Champion Bucking Bull back in the USA and is recognized as one of the greatest bulls of all time. A few years ago Troy Dunn was fortunate enough to negotiate a deal with Little Yellow Jackets owner, Joe Berger and secure a batch of his semen and introduce a new bloodline into the sport here in Australia, of which Suicidal Blonde is the first of his prodigy to be old enough for the PBR Australian Tour.
Come next Saturday night fans both young and old will be in for a night of extreme entertainment as Hughenden gets ready to host the ultimate Man versus Beast competition, which will leave fans on the edge of their seat until the last bull has bucked.
The Hughenden Sports and Recreational committee takes no short cuts when it comes to producing a great bull riding experience, Big Screens give fans the opportunity to witness replays of each ride along with a number of PBR highlight packages that are focused on further educating the fans about the sport. In addition to that they bring in the nation’s leading Arena Announcer, Warren Matotek to keep the crowds informed and entertained, whilst Shane “Mad Dog” Simpson takes centre arena as the leading bullfighter to protect the riders from the raging bulls. And a new addition to the production is a fireworks spectacular.
Once the bull ride is done and dusted all attention moves to the main stage area where 52 Pick Up will continue entertaining the crowd into the early hours of Sunday morning, so if it is an action packed weekend you are looking for then be sure to make your way to Hughenden and witness the PBR’s Toughest Sport on Earth.
