Young Queenslander Thrills Record Condobolin Crowd
A record crowd of more than 3000 packed into the Condobolin Campdraft and Pony Club Grounds on Saturday night to witness young Queensland bull rider Budd Williamson buck his way to victory in a thrilling round eight of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Challengers Series.
With only three rounds of the Challenger Series remaining before the PBR Australia National Finals, Saturday night’s battle for Condobolin took on added significance in the fight for the 2010 championship. With the nation’s best bull riders on hand to shore up their place on the PBR Australia standings, twenty-four-year-old Budd Williamson from Ayr, north Queensland swept in and stole their thunder with two magnificent rides.
Having spent the past four months on the sidelines recovering from wrist surgery, Williamson was not on anyone’s radar as a contender for victory in Condobolin. With his first round ride of 85 points on George Hempenstall’s Hollywood, Williamson immediately grabbed everyone’s attention.
An equal round high score, Williamson’s 85 points set him up for a championship round showdown with 2009 PBR Rookie Bull Thumpstar. With the little bull intent on wreaking havoc from the first jump, Williamson had his work cut out but hung on for the full eight seconds to notch up an event high score of 88 points and claim victory.
Reigning PBR Australia champion and current series leader David Kennedy grabbed second place in Condobolin with a pair of solid rides – on L&M Rodeo Company’s Rock Saw for 82.5 points and George Hempenstall’s Voo Doo for 87.5 points. Kennedy has not bucked off a bull in his past three PBR events and has stretched his lead in the PBR Australia season standings to a commanding 850 points over nearest rival Troy Wilkinson.
Chris Lowe from Uralla, NSW claimed third place in Condobolin, moving himself to third on the PBR Australia standings.
Blue Reardon acting on behalf of the Condobolin Rodeo Committee, presented the winners with their trophy and ribbons and commented that all involved with the PBR Challenger Series Condobolin were extremely pleased with the crowd numbers and the atmosphere of the event.
The PBR excitement machine now rolls north to Ingham, Queensland for round nine of the PBR Challenger Series, this Saturday night at the Ingham Showgrounds.
All roads of course lead to the 2010 Professional Bull Riders National Finals, to be held on November 26 and 27 at Tamworth’s Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre.
With the nation’s fiercest beasts and the world’s toughest athletes combined with rock concert-style music, lighting and pyrotechnics, monster video screens for instant replays and the wall-to-wall excitement of a PBR show, the 2010 PBR National Finals is one sporting event not to be missed.
