Star Bull Rider Storms Back Into Form in Hughenden

Star bull rider Rhys Angland made a triumphant return from long-term injury on Saturday night, claiming a hard fought victory in the Professional Bull Riders Challenger Series Hughenden.

Twenty-two-year-old Angland from Wagga Wagga, NSW hadn’t ridden in a PBR event since February this year due to a chronic groin injury, but made the most of this comeback event. With two spectacular rides Angland sealed the Hughenden victory, pocketed more than $3700 in winnings and qualified for the PBR Australia national finals later this year. Not a bad 16 seconds work!

Hughenden Racecourse was the venue for round seven of the 2010 PBR Challengers Series, and despite the forecast of rain and inclement weather closing in on the surrounding areas, a crowd of approximately 1000 bull riding fans turned out to witness an evening of high stakes action.

The night kicked off in fine style with the first four riders out of the chutes hanging tough for the full eight seconds. The second section produced two superb rides, with teenager Troy Wilkinson from Upper Horton, NSW making time for 86.5 points on Baillie Rodeo Co’s Hothead and Boulia veteran Grant Wells covering Gary McPhee’s Chalky for 86 points.

Rhys Angland made the eight-second hooter on his long round bull for 75 points and was offered a re-ride option. Angland made what turned out to be a wise decision, taking the reride and covering Baillie’s Drag Iron for a much-improved 86 points.

In the championship round, PBR Australia title-holder David Kennedy took the early lead, notching up 86 points on Bomber Baillie’s True Blood to go with his 79.5 points from the long round. Four rides later, however, Mundubbera’s Craig Postle snatched the running, covering Darren Brandenburg’s Kung Fu Juice.

Rhys Angland then had the ominous task of riding Gary McPhee’s champion bull Matrix, which he had done on five previous occasions for only one success. On Saturday night though the boy from Wagga Wagga was on top of his game and went the journey on the big Victorian bull for an event-high 88.5 points.

Angland’s event total of 174.5 points was enough to stave off the late challenges of Troy Wilkinson and Grant Wells, who finished second and third respectively. “I’m really happy to get the win here in Hughenden,” said an elated Rhys Angland. “The injury meant a long time on the sidelines and it cost me a spot in the PBR World Cup team this year but it’s great that I’ll now make the PBR Australia finals.”

PBR Australia Champion Bucking Bull Wild Thing took another massive stride toward securing back-to-back titles, being the highest marked bull of the PBR Challenger Series Hughenden with a stirring 46-point demolition of Townsville rider John Robbins. David Kennedy’s fifth place was enough to stretch his lead over the absent Jim Rowsell in the PBRAustralia championship race.

The Professional Bull Riders excitement machine now rolls south to the New South Wales town of Condobolin for the round eight of the PBR Challenger Series on Saturday, October 2.

Queensland bull riding fans get another taste of the toughest sport on dirt when the tropical north town of Ingham hosts the Toyo Tires Professional Bull Riders Challengers Series event on Saturday, October 9.
