Uralla Bull Rider Victorious in Hervey Bay Spectacular
Uralla cowboy Duncan Elks held out Australian bull riding champion David Kennedy and local lad Craig Postle to win the inaugural Hervey Bay Professional Bull Riders Challenger Series and Freestyle Bike Spectacular at Pialba’s Sea Front Oval on Saturday night.
More than 2000 fans watched in awe as forty of Australia’s toughest and most skilled bull riders took on a pen of the state’s rankest bovines. Despite early showers and further rain just before the championship round, the standard of bull riding was superb and the crowd endured the weather to catch all the action.
Rockley bull rider Brett Hanrahan, returning from a long-term chronic injury notched up the first qualified ride of the event with a solid 83 points on Stuart Timm’s Danger Mouse. Hanrahan set the tone for a great night for the cowboys, with 17 riders making the eightsecond hooter in the long round and a further six in the championship round.
Local rider Craig Postle from Mundubbera shared the top score in the long round with fellow Queenslander Andrew Achilles from Fernvale. Both riders posted 87 point scores, closely followed by New South Welshman Chris Whitney on 86.5, eventual winner Duncan Elks on 86 and Aussie champ David Kennedy on 85.5.
With the stage set for a cracking championship round Brett Hanrahan once again drew first blood going the journey on stock contractor Dan Klabe’s Katt Napp. Matt Postle and Chris Lowe also made the whistle before Kyogle’s David Kennedy hit the lead with a superb 87.5 points on Brian Duggan’s massive white bull Titanic.
Just when it looked as though the champ may add yet another title to his kit bag, 23-year-old Duncan Elks stepped up to the plate and scored his first event victory of the season, with a magnificent 89-point ride on Stuart Timm’s Kam-Chain.
Mundubbera’s Craig Postle then pushed Kennedy back into third place, when he snatched second with a tenacious 87-point ride on Timm’s Little Zorro.
Promoter Phil Wieland said that despite the rain keeping away many more spectators, he rated this inaugural Hervey Bay PBR Challenger Series and Freestyle Bike Spectacular a genuine success.
“We had more than 2000 fans come along on a showery evening, which is a great result,” said Mr Wieland. “The rain meant we had to cancel the second performance from the Moto X guys but the bull riding was excellent.”
The Professional Bull Riders excitement machine now rolls north to Hughenden for round seven in the PBR Challenger Series on September 4.
